Mortal Kombat 1’s Khaos Reigns Expansion Fizzles: NetherRealm Shifts Focus to New Project
The gaming community is buzzing with news about the Mortal Kombat franchise, particularly concerning its latest installment. The past months have been filled with excitement for fans of fighting games, with notable releases like Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat 1, and Tekken 8 gracing the market. However, the situation surrounding Mortal Kombat 1 appears to be shifting.

Despite its promising features, such as the introduction of Kameos—sidekick characters who join the fray during battles—Mortal Kombat 1 has struggled to maintain its player base. This innovative concept hasn't resonated as strongly with the fighting game enthusiasts as anticipated.

Recent information from a credible source has surfaced, indicating that the anticipated Khaos Reigns expansion, which included a new storyline, classic fighters, and exciting guest characters like Ghost Face and T-1000, has underperformed commercially for the developers at NetherRealm Studios and their parent company.

Furthermore, the expansion's price drop to half during sales just two months post-launch raises eyebrows about its success. In light of this, there are claims that plans for an additional story expansion and Kombat Pack 3 have been shelved. Although some completed content may see the light of day, its release remains uncertain.

As the situation develops, it appears that NetherRealm Studios is shifting focus towards their next project, that has been under development for three years. Speculation suggests this could potentially be a new installment in the Injustice series, aligning with the fresh direction of the DC universe. Should DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 indeed be halted, the studio could redirect those resources toward their upcoming endeavor.
